easy cooking ideas for poor college student?

Tuesday 13 January 2009

any ideas about what i can make for lunch and/or dinner? I'm very poor and I don't have much experience in the kitchen. How can I stretch my dollar at the grocery store?
Please help. I'm currently living off of Goldfish crackers. thanks
wow thanks guys.
budget < $40 a week.
its rough hungry life i live in :-)

Sadly I live on less than that. 20-25 a week. My ideas are for the bear bones meals. So usually no sides etc. You can add whatever you want. I also make meals in large quantities and eat it for lunch and dinner later on. Also buy items you can use for multiple dishes. I also put any extra change/bills in a can and then when I have enough I buy stuff in bulk or stock up on the more expensive stuff. You can also plan your meals around what's on special that week at the store. Go to a discount food store or buy store brands (I do this only when I know there isn't a huge difference in taste)

1. Ramen Noodles

2. Spaghetti-sauce and noodles

3. Pork and Beans-Can of pork and beans and 1lb hamburger

4. Canned Soup

5. Beef Stew- Canned Beef Stew, Biscuits

6. Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

7. Egg Salad Sandwiches

8. Rice and Veggies- Rice and Canned Veggies

9. Buttered noodles- Egg noodles, Butter, Shredded Parmesan Cheese, Salt and Pepper

10. Chili-1lb hamburger, McCormick Chili seasoning packet, Tomato sauce, kidney beans (THIS IS REALLY GOOD!! Recipe is on the back of the seasoning)

11. Frozen Pizza

12. Hot Dogs- Hot Dogs and Bread

13. Sloppy Joes- 1lb Hamburger, Can of Sloppy Joe sauce, Buns.

14. Biscuits and Gravy- Make biscuits from Bisquick and Country gravy.

15-French Toast-

16. Pancakes

17. Boxed dinners-There are all kinds that are cheap and require little or no extra ingredients.

Hope this helps. And yes I do eat better meals when I can afford it. : )

I plan to go to community college for cooking and I wanted to know if it allows me to take a language also? the college I plan to go to is Pennsylvania community college.. I have 3 years before I graduate school, but I'm the type of person who HAS to be prepared long before the actual thing.. I don't know why.. but if you have a link giving me the information and an estimated cost of the college, that would be wonderful! Thanks!

What can I use Pam cooking spray for?

Friday 9 January 2009

I'm a college student who is trying to attempt to start cooking a little. I got a can of Pam cooking spray from the local grocery store, but now I'm not sure what to use it for. What do you like to use it for? Does it work for making scrambled eggs? Cooking frozen dumplings in a pan? Baking? (I know now that I should have gotten the Pam for Baking…)

Thanks for the help!

Always use it to lightly coat the skillet before making eggs. I prefer to use a bit of olive oil when making veggies in the skillet though. The Pam is handy to spray the baking sheet you use to make chicken, beef, fish, anything. Just spray the pan before putting your meat on it.

Cooking NEVER used to be my forte- but I am a 27 y/o stay at home Mom now and I have taught myself to cook. You can do it too! Just make what you love to eat, one recipe at a time :)

Good recipes when cooking for one?

Monday 5 January 2009

I'm a college student, and live by myself. I'm a good cook, but it's just so hard to cook portions for one. I hate to waste food so I end up rarely cooking anything. I want to be healthy and eating out and fast food just isn't the way to do it. So I want to start cooking for myself again. Does anyone know any recipes that are good for one person, doesn't have to be too quick and easy. Thanks!

When I lived alone and shopped on a budget right after college, the freezer used to be my best friend! I would buy the smallest portions of meats and put one portion in the refrigerator and freeze the rest seperately in freezer bags. It's great to have hamburgers because you can form them before you put them in the freezer. Then you just thaw them and it's ready to go. I also used to cut recipes in half or in fourth (this works great with almost any pasta dish) Another thing I did was to find recipes that only made two portions and take the second portion for lunch at work. Good luck!

Cooking ground beef in microwave?

Saturday 3 January 2009

Title says it all, can someone give me instructions for cooking beef in microwave. I’m in college and I don’t have access to anything else. I do have bowls plates etc though just no appliances.
TY for the fast responses, what heat level should i use? My microwave only has high medium and low.

Get a microwave safe bowl, crumble the meat in the bowl and add your seasoning. Microwave in 2 minute intervals, stirring with a fork in between each interval until all the meat is brown and there are no pink spots. To prevent contamination, wash the fork between each stir.

You can drain the fat off of the ground beef after its done.
