Apply to a university of 4 year college as an undecided major. Then once admitted, immediately make an appointment to see a career counselor on your campus. He or she will have you take the discover and/or focus test which you will answer questions on whether you like math, writing, working with people, working alone, etc. and based on your answers you will be given a list of potential majors that might suit you according to what you like and what you don't. Then you can take intro courses in some of those fields and take your general education courses too. If after the intro course you find you don't like it, you take 2-3 new intro courses the following semester or quarter and by the time you're a junior, you'll have found something you enjoy.

How much does a culinary artist make?

Tuesday 30 December 2008

Hey, I’m a junior in highschool looking for a major. I have a spanish and italian backround so you could just imagine how much effort is put into making meals in my family! Lately I’ve been looking into the culinary arts or culinary technology in good technical schools near me but my dad has been trying to pursuade me into taking up ulatrasound technology and radiography. This is how conversations about this go in my house. Me: “So Dad, I’ve been doing some research about this…” Dad: “Nope doens’t pay enough. I told you that ultrasound is a good option.” Me: “But Dad, I’ve also been thinking about something like this..” Dad: “Well whatever you want to do, but I’m telling you that you should seriously think about radiography.” I know I should probably listen to him and I really want to make him happy but I also want to make ME happy and ultrasound and radiography don’t exactly appeal to me. It looks like you do more working with teams when you’re a cook and such and I do very much enjoy working with people and on teams especially. Does a career in the culinary arts pay well? Thanks ahead of time for any answers. XD

Well I have worked in this field for over 45 years so I guess you could call me “experienced.”

A good pastry chef can make anywhere between $25,000 a year up to $80,000 a year depending on where he works. However the high paid jobs are far and few between. The reward is making something beautiful out of practically nothing. Just take some ingredients and combine like a chemist and create something wonderful.

The down side, yes this is reality check time, is that good pastry chefs work about 60 to 80 hours a week. Mostly on the weekends. You give up all holidays because you are the one creating the food for everyone else to enjoy on the holidays.

Most average pastry chefs make about $30,00 to $35,000 a year and work like a dog.

As for a regular Chef working in a kitchen, the pay is slightly higher by about $10,000 more per year. However the hours are longer and except for a few lucky individuals, most are just glorified kitchen slaves to the head chef. Most of which are self centered, arrogant and think they walk on water and you should adore them and bask in their aura as they enter the room.

This might pis* off a few chefs but I swear to you it is true. There are of course a few wonderful exceptions but to few to mention.

A few really great professional head chefs can make 6 figure incomes but then again how many A List movie stars are there really?

I hope this helps.

High Blood Pressure Runs In My Family, How Can I Avoid This?

Friday 26 December 2008

Almost everyone on my mother’s side has high blood pressure. Ages (diagnosed) ranging from 18 (special case. Severely overweight) and up. Aunt, uncles, mom, grandma, cousin. My aunt is on dialysis after years of stupidly not taking her medication for reasons she can’t even justify. And my grandmother was on it for about 5 years until she died.

Just recently, this week in fact, my mom at 52 was diagnosed with high cholesterol.

What can I do to avoid this? I’m 16 and an African American if that matters. I tried and succeed a couple of years to get my mom to stop cooking with shortening and go to vegetable oil. And I was almost successful in getting her to try Olive Oil before the prices of gas and everything else soared. Money’s tight, so pricey organic food is not likely to happen.

I don’t/can’t cook. After an accident when I destroyed a small pot, I am forbidden to cook anything other than things like instant noodles. (I know, right).

I eat as healthy as most kids my age do. I eat tons of fruit when we have them on hand. -Not lately since our frig was broken and everything was either thrown away or frozen. I eat lots of salad with fresh spiniach and not much Italian dressing.

I must admit, I do love french fries, but I’m limiting myself to have a somewhat healthy diet. I guess I could exercise more…but lately, the weather’s been either too hot or raining to no end, so it limits my ability to go out and walk or ride a bike.–I do exercise at school, you should see the stairs I walk up and down and up and down on a daily base. By the end of the day, I’ve done 20+ flights.

Anyway, I’m just rambling now, but are there any vitamins or anything I could take to spare me the dialysis machine at 40 something?

As always. The best medicine is diet and exercise. Ive always read and hear that African Americans have a higher risk. Just take care of yourself, don’t over do it on junk food and always exercise, even if your not over-weight. Exercise is very important, now when your 40 and always. Good Luck.

P.S. By the way. Don’t worry yourself about it anymore, or you will stress yourself out and then you will end up with it. Stress is also a contributing factor.
